Environment and Social Policy

The DP World London Gateway project comprises the design and development of a Deep Sea Container Port, Logistics and Commercial Park, and the development and enhancement of the local transport network. London Gateway acknowledges that the design and construction phase of the development project has the potential to significantly impact on the marine and terrestrial environment, and to give rise to various effects on the neighbouring communities.

London Gateway strives to exercise a duty of care both towards the natural environment and society in order to safeguard the environmental assets and to foster conscientious management of its operations. London Gateway is committed to minimising the impacts of the Project through the use of sustainable design and construction. London Gateway has established a structured Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) which meets the requirements of the international environmental management standard ISO14001. This policy statement provides the framework on which the London Gateway ESMS is based.

Through the tiered management of environmental and social aspects DP World London Gateway is committed to:

  • Applying the DP World core values of ‘Commitment’, Responsibility, ‘Innovation’, and ‘Growth’ to the environmental management of the London Gateway Project.
  • Preventing pollution and ensuring measures are implemented to identify, mitigate and monitor any significant impacts on the neighbouring communities, marine environment, terrestrial habitats, flora and fauna.
  • Fulfilling measures and actions that minimise and offset unfavourable consequences, along with facilitating and strengthening beneficial outcomes of the Project.
  • Promoting environmental & social awareness and guidance to key internal department functions, suppliers, contractors and partners.
  • Ensuring compliance with the DP World Anti-Bribery & Corruption Global Policy and Procedure (July 2011) and applicable UK and International regulations (most pertinently the UK Bribery Act, 2010).
  • Facilitating sustainable development through the Company's procurement process to encourage the application of environmentally sound and socially responsible practices throughout the supply chain.
  • Complying with the duties placed upon it within the requirements of Statutory Legislation, whilst at all times complying with, as a matter of best practice, the requirements and duties set out within Approved Guidance as issued by the Environmental Agency and other organisations.
  • Improving and enhancing the project site through continued ecological and amenity development and through investigating the baseline soil and groundwater quality and, where appropriate, remediating the site and rendering it fit for its intended end-use.
  • Identifying objectives and targets to ensure that the environmental and social aspects and impacts are managed effectively and that continuous improvement is achieved.
  • Exercising respect to the neighbouring communities and acting with deference to their customs, established way of life and societal norms. Continuously engaging with the local communities and their representatives, professional bodies, public oversight groups and other relevant stakeholders, thereby forging partnerships and fostering meaningful co-operation.
  • Maintaining an effective and regular dialogue with employees and workers at all levels and across all entities of the Company, aiming at the creation of beneficent working conditions and mutually supportive frameworks.
  • Ensuring safety of all operations and activities associated with the Project and enabling mechanisms for incident control, investigation, reporting and communication so that the personnel and the local communities are reliably safeguarded.

DP World London Gateway will ensure that management and supervisory staff are provided with the necessary resources, equipment, information, instruction and training to be aware of their responsibilities for the implementation of the policy to ensure that environmental and social issues are given adequate consideration in the planning and day-to-day supervision of all work.

All employees and sub-contractors are expected to co-operate and assist in the implementation of this policy, whilst ensuring that their own works, so far as is reasonably practicable, are carried out without risk to themselves, others, or the environment. This includes co-operating with management on any environmental related matter.

The CEO has overall responsibility for all Environmental matters and the issues of social importance. The operation of this policy and the associated procedures will be monitored and reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that they remain current and applicable to the Company’s activities.   This policy is consistent with the DP World EHS Policy and has been endorsed by the Regional Managing Director and London Gateway Senior Management Team who give their full support in its implementation.
