Environment Overview

We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and have been working with scientists, environmental experts and government regulatory bodies to ensure we are preserving the site’s ecology and protecting marine life as we convert the disused oil refinery into a world-class shipping port.

The Thames Estuary is a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the European Union’s Habitats Directive and both marine and terrestrial land at the London Gateway site are currently home to a range of wildlife.

Studies undertaken by the London Gateway team have led to a blueprint of what needs to be put in place to ensure wildlife is safeguarded.

In order to meet these criteria, London Gateway is being planned and developed in a sustainable way which will be sympathetic to the local environment.

We are proud of the environmental programme that we are carrying out on the London Gateway project. For further information about the programme, please click on the video above.
