Maximising Use of Rail
With rail transport producing on average five times less carbon emissions per container than the equivalent road transport, London Gateway aims to reduce the environmental impact of its operations by transporting up to 30% of freight by rail.
Each train will carry the equivalent of approximately 37 lorry loads of cargo that will be taken off the UK’s roads helping to reduce both congestion and carbon emissions.
London Gateway will be moving a section of the branch line that connects London Gateway to the main line nearly 100 metres further away from a local residential area, allowing it to run on the other side of existing trees, which will help to provide noise mitigation.
Other rail improvements will include converting two kilometres of the Thames Haven branch line to twin track and creating three terminals dedicated to rail freight.
